Absolute Steel offers a wide range of commercial carport systems so you can easily find the style that fits your property or project. What matters most, however, is choosing a design that complies with or surpasses the Design Load requirements set by your local building department. Style should always follow function, so the first step is identifying what loads your structure must handle before settling on a look.
Understanding Load Criteria
Every location across the U.S. comes with its own set of load factors. It’s not just about snow—true structural integrity accounts for several conditions, including:
-
Applicable Building Code (year/version)
-
Roof Live Load, Snow Load, Wind Speed & Exposure
-
Seismic Group & Design

Cantilever Carport Types
Our cantilever systems are available in several designs:
-
Pi-Cantilever (engineered for heavier snow and wind demands)
All of these feature a single-column design capable of handling virtually any wind exposure. For example, we engineered cantilever carports in Puerto Rico that met sustained wind speeds of 160+ mph. Typically, meeting such requirements involves a deeper or wider concrete foundation to anchor the structure against extreme conditions.
Heavy Snow Considerations
If your site is in a region with snow loads greater than 35 PSF, a single-post flat roof design is not the right fit. Limited snow runoff and potential buildup place too much strain on the structure. For these environments, we recommend the Pi-Cantilever system. Its dual-post layout resembles the mathematical π symbol, providing the added support needed to perform in high-snow regions.
Cost Factors
Will this option cost more? Yes—both the carport and the larger footings your building department may require will add to the expense. To get accurate pricing tailored to your project, it’s best to speak directly with an experienced professional.
